Alexander Cozens - Russian-Born British Draftsman and Painter

Alexander Cozens is one of the greatest artists of all times. Alexander Cozens was a Russian-born British draftsman and painter who, along with John Robert Cozens his son, was one of the leading watercolorists of the 18th century. Alexander Cozens was born to Richard Cozens, who was a shipbuilder by profession and was serving to the tsar of Russia.

Alexander Cozens settled in England after his visit to Rome in the year 1746 and became a fashionable drawing master. He in the mean time completed his education
in England and returned to Russia shortly after that. He did not settle in England under he was around the age of thirty. After he settled down in England he became the first artist from the country to work exclusively as a landscapist and that helped to earn respect for his medium. In addition, Alexander Cozenswas also a popular teacher and wrote multiple treatises. He expounded his blot system in his dissertation, A New Method of Assisting the Invention in Drawing Original Compositions of Landscape.
