When it comes to watercolor painting there are three major items used to create these masterpieces which are:

  • Paint
  • Brushes
  • Paper or background

The paint that you will hear more often mentioned with watercolor painting is of course a water-based paint often referred to as watermedia. The long-established watercolor paint is created with translucently ground pigment combined with:

  • Gum Arabic
  • Glycerin or honey
  • Clove oil

Brushes used for watercolor painting are softer than those used for acrylic or oil painting and of course are created to hold water. The variety of shapes for watercolor brushes include:

  • Flat
  • Round
  • Mop
  • Fan

Paper of course is another story. Some artist prefer different materials instead of watercolor paper such as:

  • Wood
  • Plastic
  • Thin paper
  • Smooth paper
  • Rough surfaced paper
  • Arches paper
