Watercolor painting is an absorbing artistic activity which is an enriching experience for your mind and soul. One of the unique techniques in watercolor painting is the wet in wet or wet on we painting technique. This is a painting technique in which several layers of wet paint are applied on previous fresh layers of wet paint. In this painting technique, speed is quite important as the art work has to be finished before the first layers have dried.

The beginning of the Wet-in-wet painting technique dates back to the origin of oil painting. This painting technique was used by many of the outstanding artists in small parts of their pictures. Today, the wet in wet is one of the most popular watercolor painting techniques. In this technique paints are added to a wet layer of paint on the paper which in turn produces a soft, diffused look as the colors mix. The wetness of the first layer and the extent the second color is diluted decides the level to which the two colors mix. In wet in wet method you can have anything from a soft-edged shape to a widely spread pattern. The wet in wet watercolor painting technique can create spectacular, lively paintings and that is why it is worth experimenting with it. This technique is generally useful for signifying movement in a painting and also for diffusing shapes when you don't want to express too much detail.
